HOT stuff - that’s the verdict on Mirch Masala. Restaurant-goers in Tooting have nominated it their favourite curry house in a new competition to find the best south Asian cuisine in the UK.
Mirch Masala, which opened in Upper Tooting Road in 2002 and employs 10 staff, is known for its tempting range of Pakistani dishes.
The restaurant will now go to the next round of the Tiffin Cup competition, set up this year by Leicester East MP Keith Vaz.
If shortlisted, the staff may be invited to central London for a cook-off.
Competition organisers invited MPs to find the best restaurant in their constituency.
When Tooting MP Sadiq Khan asked residents to send him their nominations Mitch Masala emerged as the clear winner.
Mr Khan said: "The challenge of finding the most popular restaurant was considerable.
“ People commented on the friendly atmosphere in the restaurant and the quality of the freshly-prepared food."
Manager Arshad Hayat said: "It is a great honour for Mitch Masala to have been nominated.
The reason our food is so fresh is that we prepare and cook the dishes three to four times a day.
We use all our own spices and buy vegetables in the local market."
The other nominated restaurants in Tooting were Masaledar, Upper Tooting Road; Lahore Karahi, Tooting High Street; Vijaya Krishna, Mitcham
Road; Radha Krishna Bhavan,Tooting High Street; Shoihee Shonah, Trinity Road; Kastoori, Upper Tooting Road; The Shahnaz, Tooting High Street;
and Kolam, Upper Tooting Road.

Mirch to be proud of and that’s a fact:
Tooting’s Mirch Masala is the area’s best curry house - and that’s official. The restaurant has won a competition to find the best South Asian curry house and will now go forward to the next stage of the contest.
Tooting MP Sadiq Khan was asked to collect responses from residents and nominate a restaurant with the best South Asian cuisine. If shortlisted, its chefs will be invited to central London to take part in a special cook-in for the Tiffin Cup 2005.
Mirch Masala manager Arshad Bayat said: “We opened our restaurant in 2002 and now employ 10 members of staff. “ The reason why our food is so fresh is that we prepare and cook the dishes three to four times a day. “ We use all our own spices and buy vegetables in the local market. “ I think Mirch Masala stands a good chance in the next stage of the competition.”
Mr Khan said he had received a lot of emails, letters and phone calls about the competition. He said people commented on the friendly atmosphere in Mirch Masala and the quality of the freshly-prepared food.
Award Winning Curry
On Guardian December 15 2005
As you approach Mirch Masala in Upper Tooting Road, you see what looks like a fairly normal café, devoid of the glitz of surrounding restaurants, with large windows and nondescript tables and chairs. But closer inspection tells a different story. Crowds of people queue outside the door, people hustle and bustle past each Other and you hear snatches of conversation from the different groups which frequent the karahi restaurant, which has recently been named the best south Asian restaurant in Tooting. In one corner you see an Asian family of about six people taking advantage of the low prices and plentiful food on offer In another, a group of South Africans make the most of the bring-your-own-booze policy and are cracking into their first beer. An English couple talk to each other over the din and a group of young professionals de-stres from their hard day and hands fly everywhere as they reach for the different dishes.
Mirch Masala has been running since 1995 and has established branches in Norbury, Tooting and east London, under the watchful gaze of its owner and founder, Riaz Hassan Sabir, 49. The specialities are karahi and barbecue dishes. All food is prepared fresh on the premises, which may explain the massive popularity, as it tastes so fantastic.
Ajmal Malik, who talked to us about the history of the food, said: “Here the speciality is we have a menu where the diner decides what they want and it is prepared fresh, not taken out of a fridge and microwaved. They have not compromised on the quality of the meat or any of the ingredients.”
We tried karahi butter chicken, karahi lamb, kebabs and a selection of barbecued meats. We ate them with naan breads and were given delicious mango lassis to sip on. The lamb was tender, the chicken was not too overwhelmed by butter sauce, and the barbecued chops, kebab, and chicken tikka were smoky and delicious without being too tough. All the meat is halaal.
Mirch Masala has a string of awards to its credit. The Norbury branch won a highly commended in the Croydon Guardian’s Restaurant
of the Year awards and the Tooting branch won its region in the Tiffin Cup and has gone on to the national finals.
